What are Blueways?
Get on the Blueways and take time out to explore Ireland's unique waterscapes. Blueways are a network of multi-activity recreational trails, based on or alongside idyllic lakes, canals and rivers in Ireland. They provide scenic routes into the heart of rural Ireland by canoe, bike or on foot. Connect with friends and family as you escape to unique natural environments. Feel totally chilled out on a guided paddling trip; build up an appetite on an exhilarating electric bike trip; or gently meander on a canal-side walk. Tranquil Blueway journeys, where the pace of life is slow, along glistening waters, softly fringed and abundant with nature. Get active... but do it your way, on a Blueway. This website provides information on the trails themselves as well as opportunities to "Get on the Blueway" - bookable activity experiences to make it easy for you to get onto the trails with experts who will guide you on your journey.
There's more to Blueways
Along with the trails, there's so much more to enjoy in Blueway areas, with relaxing places to stay and delightful places to eat. This website provides details of these fantastic hostelries and eateries, but it also showcases the exciting and diverse range of attractions to enjoy and explore on a Blueways break, with everything from heritage and culture, to arts and craft.
The Blueways Network
The trails are defined by trail heads, put in and take out points and readily available trail information. Blueways can be developed on canals, rivers, lakes or along the coast and can incorporate other associated land based trails adjacent to the water trail. These natural trails have wide appeal for local use and domestic visitors, as well as encouraging international tourism. Blueways can be used by all ages and abilities - with something for everyone, the slogan “Blueway, do it your way” has been adopted to reflect their accessibility and diversity.
A number of partners have been involved with the lead agency, Waterways Ireland, in developing Blueway trails in Ireland. These include Canoeing Ireland, Sport Ireland Trails, Fáilte Ireland, Local Authorities, Tourism Offices. Much work has been carried out with local communities and businesses around the Blueways, to develop packages combining activity with fabulous places to Stay, Eat and Visit.
