Portumna Workhouse opened in 1851 and was closed when the workhouses were abolished in 1921. Gradually the building fell out of use until revived in 2011 as an education, tourism and conservation project to tell the story of the workhouse system. You can visit and tour the building, relive what it was like to be part of the workhouse system, see some of the original furniture and fittings and watch the video on the workhouse system. The workhouse is also the Tourist Information officfor the area and they can advise you where else to visit.
